Traveling By Air

Choices:
Puerto Escondido International (PXM)

Puerto Escondido has its own international airport, Aerocaribe, a division of Mexicana Airlines that is presently the only airline that flies from Mexico City into Puerto Escondido (approximately $190 U.S. each way, although prices may vary according to season and exchange rate). So if you choose to fly directly into Puerto Escondido from an international destination and want your baggage to be transferred automatically onto your Aerocaribe flight to Puerto Escondido, you will need to fly into Mexico City on Mexicana Airlines. If you choose to fly into Mexico City on another airline, you'll need to walk your bags through customs in Mexico City before you catch the 50 minute flight to Puerto Escondido on Aerocaribe.
Note: It's quite difficult to actually arrange a non-layover flight to Puerto because there's only one flight a day coming in.

Huatulco International (HUX)
Sometimes a long layover in Mexico City can be avoided by flying into or out of Huatulco (a scenic 1 hour bus or taxi ride from Puerto Escondido). Huatluco Airport is now getting four flights a day. You can usually fly into Puerto Escondido and out of Huatulco or visa versa with no extra charge. To get from the Huatulco airport to Puerto Escondido you can either take a taxi for $80US or you can go to nearby la Crucecita and catch a bus to Puerto Escondido about $8. If you come in around dark its quite hard to make your way to the Puerto. There are a few travel services that make traveling from the States quite less of an arduous journey.

How To Get From Place To Place

Most beaches, restaurants, and hotels are within walking distance from where you are most likely staying. From anywhere in Puerto you can find a taxi, colectivo or a bus.

Taxis:
Taxis are inexpensive and can be hired by ride, hour or day. The average taxi ride is 20-30 pesos. The trick with the taxis here is to ask how much "cuanto cuesta" before you get in. Agree upon a price you are both happy with then start your ride.

Colectivos:
A colectivo is a pick-up truck with a blue rain cover structure over the top. On the front is either "el mercado", "barra", or "colo". They go pretty much everywhere in Puerto. These are almost as frequently found as taxis but only cost 3 pesos.

Bus:
A shuttle bus runs to the beaches further out approximately every half an hour. Town buses run loops on several routes around town and maybe boarded at stops for 3 pesos. For the large buses which go all over Mexico take a look at by bus

Rentals:
-Bikes and mopeds are available for rent from several locations.
-Boats you can also hire to take you to the surrounding beaches. Anywhere where there are boats you can persuade them to tour you around.
