Traveling By Bus

Bus transportation offers a inexpensive way to travel in Mexico. They generally run day and night. Most cities in Mexico have a Primero Clase (First Class) bus station. Its recommended that you invest a few extra dollars for the luxury class if possible. Most of the buses show movies, and have bathrooms. They are comfortable and safe. Do keep an eye on all of your possessions!

By Bus from Mexico City:
Flights into Mexico City are often less expensive than into Acapulco. Therefore, the overall cheapest option is usually flying into Mexico City followed by a 8-12 hour direct bus ride to Puerto Escondido. While this option takes longer, these buses are often more comfortable than the ones that depart from Acapulco and make less frequent stops.

From Mexico City, all of Estrella Blanca’s buses leave out of El Centro Camionero Sur. Bus lines departing from other stations, like the Cristobal Colon bus line, often take a considerably longer route to get to Puerto Escondido. You can get to el Centro Camionero Sur by metro from most parts of the city, including the airport (metro stop: Tasqueño), but if you have a lot of luggage or arrive during rush hours, a taxi may be better.

Each evening beginning at 7p.m. the Estrella Blanca bus line has direct and semi-direct buses departing from Mexico City to Puerto Escondido. This is the quickest and most comfortable route. Throughout the day, there are also many buses leaving to Acapulco where you can make a connection to Puerto Escondido. However, if you plan on traveling through Acapulco and would like to continue directly to Puerto Escondido, be sure to get a bus that goes to Centro Camionero El Ejido. Only from there can you catch the bus to Puerto Escondido.

The main bus station in Puerto is on Avenida Miguel Hidalgo (954) 582-0050.

*Mexico City Tourist Trap*
Tips for Transportation in Mexico City:
When as you exit the airport, you will find many transportation options. Be conscious of a little tourist trap; the Mexico City airport personnel and the airport taxi drivers are working together to make sure people only use airport taxis(yellow taxis). You could end up paying 40$ to get to the bus station. They make you buy a taxi ticket at a airport taxi booth, the ticket you then give to a driver. These tickets usually are around 200 pesos, to even a very close hotel.
• Avoiding this tourist trap is very simple. When you
exit the airport simply walk off airport property(across the street) to where they cannot see you. Flag down one of the many other taxis zooming by.
• I assure you they will try to make you stay in the airport area, but ignore them, they have no power over you.
• A Volkswagen bug taxi might cost 30 pesos to get you to the bus station
Getting to the Bus Station from the Airport:
When you find a taxi(you only should use a airport yellow taxi if you have a large amount of luggage) get in and say: "la estación "Tasqueña" por favor." That should do it. When you get there, it is quite big, find the Estrella Blanca or Cristobal Colon booth. The Estrella Blanca bus will get you to Puerto in about 12 hours. Plan B take Cristobal Colon bus to Puerto, an extra 4 hrs.

"Tasqueña" and Puerto Escondido Bus Station Schedules:
So here are the schedules for the two buses lines to Puerto. The earliest being 6:15 and latest 8:30, Try to get there an hour early, because you never know with these stations and buying tickets.

By Bus from Acapulco:
Acapulco has a large international airport with flights arriving daily from many parts of the world. Once in Acapulco, Auto Transportes Estrella Blanca provides bus service between Acapulco and Puerto Escondido. There are departures from el Centro Camionero El Ejido every few hours from 3:30am until 11:56pm. (all departure times are subject to periodic schedule changes so it is recommended you check the schedule of departures with Estrella Blanca bus lines). The semi-direct buses take about 7 and a half hours. The cost is about $20 U.S. The ordinario costs about $17 and takes 8 and a half to 10 hours due to frequent stops.

By Bus from Oaxaca City:
Cristobal Colon has many different buses throughout the day to and from Puerto Escondido. Look at Schedules below.

How To Get From Place To Place

Most beaches, restaurants, and hotels are within walking distance from where you are most likely staying. From anywhere in Puerto you can find a taxi, colectivo or a bus.

Taxis:
Taxis are inexpensive and can be hired by ride, hour or day. The average taxi ride is 20-30 pesos. The trick with the taxis here is to ask how much "cuanto cuesta" before you get in. Agree upon a price you are both happy with then start your ride.

Colectivos:
A colectivo is a pick-up truck with a blue rain cover structure over the top. On the front is either "el mercado", "barra", or "colo". They go pretty much everywhere in Puerto. These are almost as frequently found as taxis but only cost 3 pesos.

Bus:
A shuttle bus runs to the beaches further out approximately every half an hour. Town buses run loops on several routes around town and maybe boarded at stops for 3 pesos. For the large buses which go all over Mexico take a look at by bus

Rentals:
-Bikes and mopeds are available for rent from several locations.
-Boats you can also hire to take you to the surrounding beaches. Anywhere where there are boats you can persuade them to tour you around.
