Cars
in Mexico
Driving
in Mexico can be as exciting as taking a bus. Make sure you have current
maps and be aware that some listed paved roads are not there at all.
Avoid driving between towns in the evening, stick to main highways,
take short cuts at your own peril, and enjoy the adventure.
Rent
a car in Puerto:
Warning:
If you feel you must rent a car, be prepared for the 15 bucks extra
that the rental agencies charge for 'theft' insurance or maybe some
other explanation. Check and confirm with your credit card company on
the coverage which is needed and usually included with your credit card
use. Pay particular attention to the pre inspection routine for existing
car damage - scratches, dents, etc.. A favorite scam is to charge an
extra 50 to 100 bucks for minor scratches and dings when you turn the
car back in. Also find safe evening parking as rental cars are a target
for free gas - always check your gas tank before taking off in the morning.

How
To Get From Place To Place
Most beaches,
restaurants, and hotels are within walking distance from where you are
most likely staying. From anywhere in Puerto you can find a taxi, colectivo
or a bus.
Taxis:
Taxis are inexpensive and can be hired by ride, hour or day. The average
taxi ride is 20-30 pesos. The trick with the taxis here is to ask how
much "cuanto cuesta" before you get in. Agree upon a price
you are both happy with then start your ride.
Colectivos:
A colectivo is a pick-up truck with a blue rain cover structure
over the top. On the front is either "el mercado", "barra",
or "colo". They go pretty much everywhere in Puerto. These
are almost as frequently found as taxis but only cost 3 pesos.
Bus:
A shuttle bus runs to the beaches further out approximately every half
an hour. Town buses run loops on several routes around town and maybe
boarded at stops for 3 pesos. For the large buses which go all over
Mexico take a look at by bus
Rentals:
-Bikes and mopeds are available for rent from several locations.
-Boats you can also hire to take you to the surrounding beaches. Anywhere
where there are boats you can persuade them to tour you around.
